REACH (1907/2006/EC)

The aim of the REACH regulation (1907/2006/EC) is the protection of human health and the environment through early and improved identification of the intrinsic properties of chemical substances.

According to the EU Chemical Regulation REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals), since 2007 only chemical substances that have been registered may enter into circulation within Europe.

As the “downstream user”, Unisto does not have an obligation to register the manufactured products. We identify fully with REACH and work exclusively with suppliers whose raw materials are appropriately registered.

The regulation came into force on 1 June 2007 and has the following primary objectives:

  •  To better protect humans and the environment from possible risks in the handling of chemicals.     Here it is the responsibility of industry to undertake risk assessments
  •  To enable the free circulation of chemical substances within the EU
  •  To boost competition and innovation
  •  To promote alternative test methods for the evaluation of risks

Moreover the raw materials employed to produce our security seals comply with the material and substances defined in the articles 33 and 57 of the Regulation 1907/2006/EC (ECHA Canditate-List of substances of very high concern), meaning that no materials and substances from this list are used.

ISO 17712- Unisto Novus- High Security Seal

The certificate ISO 17712 for security seals and their application for freight containers, forming the basis of the U.S. Customs & Border Protection C-TPAT international supply chain security management system.

The implementation of ISO 17712 for “Freight containers – Mechanical seals” achieves the following:

  •    A uniform procedure for the classification of seals based on mechanical resilience
  •    The guarantee of and adherence to high security and quality standards
  •    Guarantee of traceability of the seals sold

The Unisto Novus bolt seal was tested by MIRDC, Taiwan in accordance with ISO 17712 and fully complies with the high security requirements for level H (High Security Seal).  The high-security seal (H) is a seal aimed at discouraging unauthorised opening and closing of the seal without leaving evidence. Tools such as bolt croppers or side cutters are required to remove high-security seals.

These certificates are awarded based on both external and internal tests carried out in accordance with ISO 17712.

External testing:

  • Pull-strength test
  • Shearing resistance test
  • Bending strength test
  • Impact strength tests

Current Unisto ISO 17712 certificates:

Internal testing:

Testing for Evidence of Tampering, section 6

In accordance with ISO 17712, section 6, suitable tamper tests are set out in writing, executed and the test results documented. The aim of these manipulation tests is to ensure that the H seal cannot be opened and closed again without leaving visible traces of tampering. If evidence of tampering is visible the seal has passed the test. Our high-security seal has successfully passed all internal and external tests and has thus been proven to be a high-quality, tamper-evident, barrier security seal.

Food law provisions

Tests carried out at an independent testing institute have shown that many of our products and synthetic colours correspond to the requirements of EU Regulation 1935/2004 “Materials and articles intended to come into contact with food”, including EU Regulation 10/2011 “Plastic materials and articles intended to come into contact with food”.

Known consignor

A known consignor is a company that sends goods via air freight or airmail in its name and on its own account. When dispatching it adheres to security standards and provisions that are applicable.

Certification as a known consignor (for air freight only) saves time-consuming and costly checks at the airport.
A known consignor carries out the checks itself and is responsible for the item’s safe passage.
Thereafter the freight can be moved to the airport cargo handler using a certified carrier and loaded directly on to the aircraft.
The following points are ensured:

  • Protection of air freight from unauthorised access
  • Deployment of verified, specially trained staff
  • Control and protection of cargo from access and tampering
  • Consignment-based security declaration
  • Guaranteeing security requirements throughout the entire transport chain

Since Unisto AG, Horn is a validated known consignor, our customers save both time and additional costs.

EcoVadis

In line with these efforts, Unisto uses environmentally friendly and resource-saving technologies and materials wherever possible. Recycling and waste separation are actively promoted, with recyclable waste being processed off-site for reuse. Material consumption is reduced by actively redesigning the product range, including new applications with digital solutions, and by switching products from single-use to reuse applications. Employees are actively encouraged to be environmentally conscious at all times and are regularly informed about environmental activities.
